The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has rescinded the requirement for travellers to show a negative COVID-19 test result or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 before boarding a flight to the United States, effective Sunday 12 June 2022.

This is great news for travellers and for the travel industry. It means that visitors can travel more freely to the US without incurring the expense and inconvenience of pre-departure testing. Importantly, it also means that US citizens can travel outside of the US with the assurance that they won’t be required to show a negative test result in order to return home.

However, most non-citizen nonimmigrant travellers are still required to show proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before boarding a flight to the United States from a foreign country.

In addition, visitors to the US should ensure that they have the appropriate visa documentation for their trip. In the case of visa-exempt citizens, a valid ESTA is required in order to travel to the US, together with a mandatory travel attestation form.

Because an ESTA is valid for a period of two years, many travellers seeking to take advantage of the relaxed entry requirements will not be in possession of a valid ESTA, so now is a good time to remind travellers of this requirement.
